Anatomy of a Hoax: The Duke Lacrosse Case

Description: The program will explore the facts, strategy and ultimately the lessons of the prosecution that became known to the country as the "Duke Lacrosse Case." Jim Cooney will review the basic facts of the case, including the digital record-one which indicated that no crime could have occurred as described by the false accuser. Much of this evidence was simply ignored by the prosecutor and the police. Joe Cheshire will dicuss the media strategy and the challenges of dealing with the media narrative in this case. He will describe how the defense team was able to reverse the overwhelming narrative guilt, turning it into a narrative of innocence and prosecutorial misconduct. Wade Smith will discuss the lessons learned and the reasons behind this prosecution, looking for explanations in both modern sources and in the classical sources of Western civilization. Ultimately, this modern prosecution failed as a result of a very old and well-known flaws-pride and hubris.
