Getting Paid: The Ethics of Billing and Collecting Fees

Description: The collection of fees is not directly addressed in the Rules of Professional Conduct. However both the Rules and malpractice carriers urge lawyers not to sue clients or former clients for payment of fees except when absolutely necessary for the lawyer to avoid “unbearable” financial consequences. Lawyers have a clear ethical obligation when deciding how to recover compensation for their services. This course will explore various practice management strategies that will help to reduce the number of non-paying clients you have as well as discuss your ethical obligations when collecting fees from non-paying clients.
