Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking CLE session that draws unexpected parallels between athletes who cheat and the mental health challenges faced by lawyers. In this program, the CLE Performer, Stuart Teicher explores how the pressures of high-stakes performance, ethical dilemmas, and burnout in sports mirror the stressors attorneys encounter in the practice of law. Through real-world examples and researched insight, this session uses an interesting non-law related topic to explore law-related mental health issues. Learning objectives include:
1. Understand the Connection Between Stress and Impairment: Analyze how the pressures driving athletes to cheat parallel the stress, burnout, and ethical challenges lawyers face, and explore their impact on mental health and substance use in the legal profession.
2. Recognize Signs of Struggle: Learn to identify warning signs of stress, burnout, and potential mental health or substance use issues in oneself and colleagues in the law, drawing from behavioral patterns observed in high-pressure environments.
3. Explore Prevention and Intervention: Gain practical strategies for managing stress, promoting work/life balance, and reducing the risk of impairment, including individual and firm-level preventative measures.
4. Access Support Resources: Discover Minnesota-specific lawyer assistance programs, such as Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL), and learn steps to refer or assist an impaired attorney, including treatment options and well-being support.
5. Foster a Culture of Wellness: Understand how law firms and legal organizations can develop policies to support attorney mental health, reduce stigma, and address impairment effectively.
