What is the meaning of "art and cultural heritage law," and why should we, as lawyers, learn about this area of law? If we think about it, we have all likely heard of cultural heritage but not necessarily realized that cultural heritage is protected by the law, whether it be the famous Elgin Marbles, famous portraits or objects of art, or other creative objects, both ancient and modern and from times in between. Whether we represent art and cultural institutions -- or individuals who have inherited or purchased tangible creations -- our knowledge of this area of law will be crucial to our clients that are art, cultural, and educational institutions and individuals --- who have purchased or inherited or discovered artistic or cultural items, or wish to sell or transfer title to them. They will need to be able to confirm that they have or can gain legal title to these objects, and how to protect their title or ownership to them as well. During this session, we will explore legal protection of these significant types of property.
