BENNETT L. COX
General Counsel
University Health System
Mr. Cox has been General Counsel of University Health System, Inc. since August 1999. University Health System is a nonprofit corporation created by the University of Tennessee to provide healthcare services to the East Tennessee region. University Health System operates the University of Tennessee Medical Center as well as physician practices, clinics and other outpatient healthcare services.
Prior to joining University Health System, Mr. Cox served for seven years on the staff of the University of Tennessee Office of General Counsel; most recently, as Associate General Counsel. In that position he was responsible for handling and administering litigation involving the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville and other University of Tennessee units in areas of medical malpractice, workers' compensation, product liability and contracts. Since 1992, he has advised the Medical Center regarding risk management, health law, business law, and employment law issues as well as other matters pertaining to healthcare and medical research.
Prior to his position with the University, he was in private practice with the firm of O'Neil, Parker and Williamson in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a member of the Knoxville, Tennessee, and American Bar Associations (Member of Health Law Section); the American Health Lawyers Association and a master of the bench of the Hamilton S. Burnett Chapter of the American Inns of Court.
