Yarnell Beatty joined the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA) in January 2001 as general counsel to the largest medical organization in Tennessee. In 2004, he was promoted to oversee TMA's legal, government affairs, insurance, and eHealth departments and was promoted to Vice President of Advocacy in January 2013 and Senior Vice President in 2017.
Mr. Beatty earned a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his law degree from the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia.
He formerly served as staff counsel to the Tennessee Department of Health as well as positions in the Department as Executive Director of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners and Director of Health Related Boards.
Since joining TMA, Mr. Beatty served three years as special advisor to the Tennessee Medical Group Management Association Executive Council. He is former chairman of its Legislative Committee and continues to serve as a Committee member.
In 2006, Mr. Beatty was appointed to the Compliance Committee of the Physicians' Advocacy Institute, Inc., the national entity charged with monitoring and enforcing managed care class action settlements. In 2012, Beatty was appointed to chair its Fair Medical Audit and Strategic Planning subcommittees.
Mr. Beatty served as co-director of the Tennessee Foundation for Quality Patient Healthcare which administers the Tennessee Prescription Safety Program. The Program has provided continuing medical education to thousands of prescribers. In 2009, he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Physicians' Quality Verification Organization, LLC (TPQVO), a company that provides original source credentials verification for physicians and physician assistants. He now serves as its treasurer.
He has served several terms on the Executive Council of the Tennessee Bar Association Health Law Section and has provided legislative and case updates at the annual Health Law Forum. Mr. Beatty served two terms on the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel (ASMAC). Mr. Beatty was President of ASMAC for 2013.
