Biography

Denise Burke is a Partner with Waller. Hospitals, Academic Medical Centers, physicians, medical device companies and other healthcare clients trust Denise for practical and innovative solutions to a wide range of compliance and operations issues. As a former Compliance Officer, Quality Management Professional and a key member of a Deferred Prosecution Federal Monitor Team for a medical device company, Denise has valuable firsthand experience developing effective compliance programs that sustain government scrutiny. She also assists clients with internal and external investigations, including OIG pneumonia, anesthesia and PATH audits, among others.  Denise's in-house experience in hospital, home health, durable medical equipment and physician practice management settings make her a trusted and enthusiastic advisor on both day-to-day healthcare operations issues and long-term strategic objectives.

Denise has extensive experience in federal and state fraud and abuse matters involving Stark, anti-kickback laws and the False Claims Act, and she represents clients in billing, EMTALA and HIPAA audits and appeals.  In transactional matters, she provides regulatory counsel in the formation of new healthcare organizations, including provider entities, joint ventures, ACOs and IPAs.  She received her J.D. from Memphis State University, and her B.S., with honors, from the University of Tennessee.  She is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, Member of the Memphis, Tennessee (member of the Health Law Section Executive Council), and American Bar Associations.  She is also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, Health Care Compliance Association, and the American Health Information Management Association.

Denise is recognized in Chambers USA and Best Lawyers for her healthcare law experience and was voted 2012's "Lawyer of the Year" in healthcare law for the Memphis and West Tennessee area by Best Lawyers, which is affiliated with U.S. News and World Report.  When she's not working, Denise enjoys the quiet of the family farm an hour outside of Memphis. She is also an avid sports fan.
