Biography

United States Magistrate Judge Jon A. York is a Lambuth University graduate (1997) and a graduate of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law (2003).  After receiving his law degree, Judge York served a term as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable James D. Todd of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.  Judge York was in private practice for approximately fifteen years during which he specialized in civil rights and municipal liability litigation, as well as federal criminal defense. In his practice, he primarily defended local governmental entities, public officials, and governmental employees in a variety of lawsuits including claims of excessive force, prison and jail conditions of confinement, First Amendment issues, whistleblower claims, and public education issues. 

Judge York was appointed to serve as a United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee in 2019. He is the Past-President of the Howell Edmunds Jackson Inn of Court, a Memphis Bar Foundation Fellow, and the Chairperson of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee Criminal Justice Act Committee.
