Biography

John is the owner/attorney of the Law Office of John L. Billings. He recently served as Vice President and managing officer of the Tennessee office for TCV Trust & Wealth Management, Inc., a Tennessee state-chartered, employee-owned independent trust company providing the highest quality trust administration, probate/estate services and investment management in a fiduciary capacity for individuals and families with taxable assets as well as endowments and foundations. Further he has served as in-house counsel for an insurance related holding company conglomerate, where his practice ranged among such areas as corporate governance, financial services, regulatory, compliance, contracts, intellectual property, collections, bankruptcy, litigation/outside counsel management, human resources and various other practice areas.

Before going in-house, he was in private practice in the areas of bankruptcy, creditors' rights and real estate. He received a Bachelor of Science in Communications with a minor in General Business from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (B.A., 2002) serving one summer as a U.S. Congressional intern in Washington, D.C. and a Juris Doctor from Appalachian School of Law (J.D., 2006) where he was named to the Dean's List while serving as a ASL student ambassador, treasurer for the Phi Delta Phi legal honor society and legal extern for the Honorable Judge James H. Jarvis, II of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 2006 and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee in 2008. Further he is a graduate of The Southeastern Trust School of Campbell University, a member of the Tennessee and Knoxville Bar Associations and the Knoxville Estate Planning Council. He is Past Chair of the Corporate Counsel Section of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA") and served on its Executive Council. He also served on the Board for the TBA Young Lawyer's Division ("YLD") as Vice Chair of the Membership Committee and subsequently the Public Policy Committee. He served on the Board for the Tennessee chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Appalachian School of Law Alumni Board.

Currently a member of the TBA Estate Planning and Probate section serving on its Executive Council. Additionally he is a lifetime member of Nucleus Knoxville, an alumnus of the TBA Leadership Law program (Class of 2016) and a Fellow of the TBA YLD while being active with a number of civic and professional organizations such as the Tennessee Bankers Association Trust Committee and its Working Committee on Trust Laws, Rotary Club of Knoxville, the Board of Directors for the United Way of Greater Knoxville, the Board of Directors for Muse Knoxville, tnAchieves mentor, Thrive Lonsdale volunteer reading tutor and served as a Chancellor's Associate for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
