Biography

Hon. Thomas T. Woodall was a Judge on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals from December 1996 to December 2020, when he retired. Prior to that, he was in private practice of law in Dickson from 1990 to 1996, an Assistant District Attorney General in the 24th Judicial District from 1984 to 1990, in private practice in Memphis from 1982 to 1984, and a judicial law clerk for Presiding Judge Mark Walker of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals from 1981 to 1982.  He graduated from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and was admitted to practice in Tennessee in 1981.  During his time in private practice in Dickson, he represented many clients in the Court of Criminal Appeals pursuant to an agreement with the Tennessee District Public Defenders' Conference to be a contract appellate public defender.  Prior to becoming a judge, he participated in more than 100 criminal case jury trials as a prosecutor or defense counsel.  He was a Commissioner of the Tennessee Lawyers' Assistance Program from 2011 to 2017.
