Biography

John P. Newton is a partner at the Law Offices of Mayer & Newton, where his areas of practice include business bankruptcy and consumer bankruptcy law. Mr. Newton specializes in small business cases. John has been licensed in Tennessee since 1984 and has filed thousands of consumer bankruptcy cases as well as been a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Panel Trustee for the Eastern District of Tennessee since 1985. Mr. Newton is admitted to the Federal Court and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. John earned his B.S. and M.B.A. degree in Finance, as well as his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He is certified by the American Board of Certification and the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization as a Consumer Bankruptcy Specialist. He has lectured to various professional groups on collections and bankruptcy issues. Originally from the state of Michigan, Mr. Newton is a former All-American and Letterman as a swimmer with the University of Tennessee. He swam as a member of The UT 1978 National Championship team. Mr. Newton helped set several American and World records in National and International swim competitions for the University of Tennessee and the United States, including the 1979 Pan Am Games. After his collegiate career, Mr. Newton continued to be involved in local swimming while coaching at the Webb School, Sevier County High School and Cherokee Country Club Team, as well as a student assistant for the UT Swim Team. Mr. Newton is a member of the Gettysvue Country Club and enjoys spending time with his family.
