Supreme Court Bootcamp 2012

Description: The Tennessee Supreme Court is unfamiliar territory for most lawyers. Opportunities to practice in the state’s highest court are rare. Success at the pinnacle of the legal profession requires mastery of oral and written advocacy. A persuasive performance in both areas is critical to success; a poor performance in either can lead to defeat. Accordingly, lawyers need the information and insight required to develop and perfect their oral arguments and legal writing. Indeed, this is true at all levels of legal practice, and the lessons learned during this seminar will be generally applicable to practice in trial courts and intermediate appellate courts. This seminar approaches these subjects in the context of practice in the state’s highest court. But any attorney wanting to hone their skills in oral and written advocacy will benefit greatly.

At the Tennessee Supreme Court Boot Camp, lawyers will learn from a distinguished faculty and through observation of two oral arguments. This seminar will cover the best practices for oral argument, the considerations for deciding to seek review in the Supreme Court, and critical factors for preserving issues for appeal.

Join us on October 3rd for a webcast that will review the cases that will be observed the next day. The webcast will be held at 9am Central, for those unable to attend at that time - you will be able to watch the webcast at any point after the 9am recording. Then on October 4th, attendees will register at the Tennessee Bar Center and walk over to the Tennessee Supreme Court Building for observation of two oral arguments before the Tennessee Supreme Court and a debriefing with the attorneys who argued them. Afterwards, we will return to the Tennessee Bar Center for an executive lunch and then end the day with topics on effective oral argument, Rule 11, applications, and preserving issues for appeal.

This program has a limited attendance of 50 registrants. Registrants will be accepted on a first come basis.
