Confidentiality is one of the most fundamental duties a lawyer owes a client, and the origins of the current rule is kind of interesting. Many of today's confidentiality standards trace back to the actions of some genuinely infamous people, including a serial killer from the 1970s, Bernie Madoff, and the Enron leadership.
