International Law and Practice

2017 International Law Annual Forum [Webcast]

Description:

This program will address new changes in international law. Speakers will cover the evolving landscape of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the emerging realm of international data privacy. A special session will cover the technology-driven changes taking place in today’s legal landscape and the modern law practice.

Program outline:

  • International Data Privacy
2016 was a roller-coaster year in the realm of international data privacy.  First, the European Court of Justice struck down the prior EU-US Safe Harbour Framework governing cross-border data transfers from the EU to the U.S.  After a brief period of uncertainty (and some panic), the U.S. Department of Commerce and EU Commission finalized and agreed upon a new EU-US Privacy Shield Framework that went into effect August 1, 2016.  This session will discuss highlights of the new Privacy Shield.

  • U.S Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
The year 2016 has proven to be an eventful year for the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.  From very large settlements in the hundreds of millions of dollars to renewed focus on the prosecution of individuals to a DOJ pilot program for voluntary disclosures, the FCPA landscape has changed significantly.  This session will address the FCPA generally with an emphasis on these recent developments.

  • TBA Special Committee on the Evolving Legal Market Report
This session will cover the technology-driven changes taking place in today’s legal landscape. A video will be shared covering information from TBA’s Special Committee on the Evolving Legal Market following by thoughts on how this will impact international law practice.
