In April 2023, the recording artist now known by the name “Ghostwriter” became a viral sensation after posting his original song “Heart On My Sleeve” on TikTok - a post that was viewed over 8.5 million times in just days. The song, though written by Ghostwriter, utilized artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of renowned recording artists Drake and the Weeknd, and did so shockingly well. The song sparked immediate conversation about the tremendous possibilities (and frightening consequences) presented by the use of AI in the music industry. This discussion will highlight the legal and moral issues associated with use of AI in the music industry, how states like Tennessee are working to combat those issues, and how creators are currently utilizing the technology in their work.
